Berlin (ot) – Today the German news agency awarded its best photos of the year. Georg Wendt won the News category. His photo shows then Chancellor Angela Merkel in Marlow Bird Park with Australian lorikeets. The image has attracted worldwide attention and has made its way into numerous major national and international media. The first place in each of the other categories was won by: Uli Deck with a photo of the dog swimming (Characteristics) and the high-performance computer HoreKa (symbol image), Marijan Murat with the crying Olympian Annika Schleu (Sports) and Sven Hoppe with the fairytale ballet Cinderella (Arts and Entertainment). In the category of stories, Boris Roessler prevailed with images of the flood in the Ahr valley. 49 photographers submitted a total of around 450 photos from Germany and abroad, as well as nearly 40 stories.

“The impressive winning photos are representative of the huge range of dpa photographs. Always with an eye for the essential, always there at the right time. This is how successful photojournalism works in the interest of our clients,” says Silke Brüggemeier, deputy Editor-in-chief of the dpa and head of Visuals at the largest German news agency. Photo Peer Editor-in-Chief Grimm adds: “I would like to thank all photographers for their daily commitment, often in difficult conditions such as in crisis situations or during demonstrations and natural disasters. All of you contribute to our society which continues to be independent and free on world events can be informed. ”
