He was elected by a large majority at a meeting of delegates in the Grugahalle in Essen. According to party information, Wüst was elected first on the state list with 99.1% of the 235 valid votes. As a result, there were 233 yes and two no votes.
Wüst did not have an opponent. Wüst has achieved the best result for a leading candidate of the NRW-CDU since at least the year 2000, stressed the general secretary of the NRW-CDU, Josef Hovenjürgen.

Wüst announced a short but intense election campaign after Easter. “The people in North Rhine-Westphalia expect us to get them out of the pandemic,” she said. NRW state election: SPD chooses Thomas Kutschaty as best candidate
“Hot for the election campaign” is already the NRW-SPD’s first elected candidate. Thomas Kutschaty was elected on Saturday by the Social Democrats with 96.86% during a conference of the digital party. In the subsequent election for first place on the state list by the conference of state delegates, Kuchaty even received 98.3% of the vote.
“I want to become Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia,” Kuchaty said. The SPD returns to the most populous federal state. “The Social Democratic heart is beating strong and strong again”, underlined the former minister of justice of the state. “I am willing to take responsibility and make decisions, even difficult ones”.
NRW state elections: Kuschaty prevails in the SPD and competes against Wüst
The 53-year-old lawyer from Essen received 432 of the 446 votes cast when he was nominated by the party congress. Nine delegates voted no and five abstained. Kuchaty spoke of a “dream result”.

Kuschaty comes from a railroad family in the north of Essen and studied law at the Ruhr University in Bochum. From 1997 to 2010 he worked as a lawyer.
