From May, the Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) will take care of the cleaning of another 33 green and recreational areas, the maintenance of which was previously the responsibility of the respective districts. In addition, the opening hours of many recycling centers could be extended and, under certain circumstances, more garbage containers set up on public roads.
These are just three of the twelve specific measures listed in the new ‘Overall Strategy for Clean Cities’ report. Ramona Pop (Verdi), Senator for Economy, Energy and Public Enterprises, will present him on Tuesday to the Senate for information.
“We support the districts financially and with human resources to keep our city cleaner and avoid waste,” Pop said upfront. “We need a greater sensitivity to the issue of environmental protection and a conscious approach to waste disposal among Berliners. Only together can we make our city cleaner ”.
The BSR will then be responsible for a total of 79 parks and green spaces – and for this it will receive 14 million euros from the state budget. According to an ordinance issued in December, the new areas include Großer Tiergarten (Simsonweg area) and Leopoldplatz in Mitte, Boxhagener Platz in Friedrichshain and Lausitzer Platz and Marheinekeplatz in Kreuzberg.
In Pankow, the Schlosspark Schönhausen, among other things, will be managed in the future by the BSR, in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf the Volkspark Wilmersdorf, the Preussenpark and Savignyplatz are on the list.

In addition, as of this date, the state BSR will also keep 18 recreation areas in forest districts, bathing areas, forest trails and sunbathing areas clean – previously only three. The forest areas are located in the districts of Grunewald, Köpenick, Pankow and Tegel.
According to the Pop Senate report, the newly built recycling center on Gradestraße in Neukölln is expected to open in April and the existing centers are also expected to extend their opening hours. The districts of Mitte, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Neukölln, Steglitz-Zehlendorf and Marzahn-Hellersdorf are also planning “campaign days for bulky waste”.
The administration draws up a positive interim balance sheet for the “NochMall”, the second-hand department store of the BSR. It opened in August, before the crown-related closing, the number of customers stabilized at 850. The “NochMall” (Auguste-Viktoria-Allee 99, 13403 Berlin-Reinickendorf) was opened again for two weeks – by appointment at www.nochmall.de. As soon as the situation allows it, the house wants to re-propose events related to the circular economy and upcycling.
Addendum: No more baskets automatically
Addendum of 5 April 2021: In a first version of this article it was said that the opening hours of the recycling stations should be extended and the number of waste containers should be increased. Indeed, the departments of the Senate for Economics and the Senate for the Environment seem to want it to be. In the aforementioned report, this too is formulated as follows under the heading “Objectives”. However, BSR is more reserved and therefore asked the editorial staff for the following information: With the opening of the newly built recycling center on Gradestraße in Neukölln, an extension of the opening hours in this location is also planned. It is not true that this also applies to other locations.
A spokesperson for the BSR also cites the Senate report on the number of waste paper bins: “To drastically reduce the number of overfilled garbage cans in streets, green areas, forest and parks, the need to empty or in places must also be checked there and adjusted in a timely manner. ” This means that it is first checked and then adjusted, but other waste paper baskets are not automatically installed. “Adaptation can also mean that the emptying rate is increased or a more suitable location is chosen,” explained the spokesperson.
In the list of measures taken, the report says in point 5: “Improvement of the city’s equipment with sufficient possibilities for waste disposal and better emptying of overflowing garbage cans.” Anyone who, on the basis of this information, expects the number of approximately 25,000 garbage cans in the city area to increase soon, are mistaken.
