For example, how can you not be recognized as a tourist, what tastes best locally and what places not everyone knows yet? We show you ten special highlights away from hotspots.

1. Amsterdam-West with Westergasfabriek

About 30 minutes’ walk from the center, west of the canal ring, is this charming area: the houses and canals in Amsterdam-West are at least as beautiful as the center. However, it is not that crowded here – you will certainly encounter far fewer tourists on a stroll.

The Haarlemmerweg leads directly to the Westergasfabriek.

For example, the old gas factory, Westergasfabriek, is interesting here. Numerous events take place here throughout the year. A culinary highlight in the west are also the food halls, in which there is a street food market.

2. Cycling to Ouderkerk aan de Amstel

Of course, cycling shouldn’t be missing. After all, Amsterdam is known around the world for an excellently developed network of cycle paths. This way you can easily explore places or regions. Obviously even the less known ones.

A nice place to visit is, for example, the historic village of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, about ten kilometers south of the center of Amsterdam.

Special attractions, such as particularly beautiful and impressive churches, have been drawing visitors here since the 12th century. An example was built in the 18th century, a neo-Gothic church dates from the 19th century. You will find unique funerary monuments at the Jewish-Portuguese Cemetery Beth Haim.

3. The area of the NDSM construction site: art and culture

In 1978 the Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (NDSM) shipyard was closed. The whole area then fell into disrepair, but here a privileged cultural meeting point emerged. Trendy bars line up with restaurants, studios and galleries. Here a whole new world is created: empty halls come to life.

New life is emerging in the former NDSM shipyard. Nice trendy bars and shops open there again and again.

To see for yourself, for example, you can use a free ferry behind Amsterdam Central Station. You can then reach the NDSM shipyard in just ten minutes.
