Gastronomic criticism from Lake Zurich

With the takeover by restaurateur Michel Péclard, the pub on the island of Ufnau should become a popular destination. Visitors should take their time, order wine, and explore cultural sites after eating.

Guests arrive in batches in the restaurant in the center of the island of Ufnau. Whenever a ship docks – and this poses additional challenges for the service. Sometimes two or three dozen people want to sit in front or in front of the bar which is still marked on the pier information panel as “House of the Two Crows”. Large garden, internal area, a playground behind the house and then the good weather on Easter Monday: not an easy task.

But the bottom line is that the employees of Michel Péclard’s restaurant, which has been run by Pumpstation Gastro GmbH for a few weeks, handled everything quite well. And once you, as a guest, understand where you need to show up to get to your reserved table, it’s time to sit back and enjoy.

Regional products and local color characterize the picture

What’s in the elegant restaurant? Virtually everything for all price ranges and occasions. No one is forced to spend big bucks and no one is prevented from doing so. Charcoal-grilled Cervelat is available for CHF 8.50, as well as a tomahawk steak for two for CHF 180. Surcharges apply.

Doing everything with local produce is hardly possible in a tourist restaurant of this type and size, but there are some friendly approaches. Like the chicken eggs of Inselbauer Häcki or the tartare of the Galloway cattle by Andrea Birchler, raised in the pastures of the monastery. We weren’t able to find out if the cake actually came from Grandma, as stated on the menu, or if that’s more of a crafty metaphor.

Crunchy fish as they should be

Our order came fairly quickly after the waitress made a mistake with the table. Fischer Hiestand whitefish chips with tartar sauce (CHF 29.50), Hörnli with ghackets and homemade apple sauce (CHF 23), salad with eggs and croutons for CHF 12.50. We also ordered French fries (Fr.7.50), ignoring the fact that everything together doesn’t have to pass for particularly healthy food.

The result on the beautiful plates offered much more light than shade, but it wasn’t very bright. Well cooked Hörnli with some meat and cheese was something to be proud of, but the applesauce was so sweet it was almost edible. The crispies, on the other hand, were perfectly juicy and crunchy, which we quietly dipped in the accompanying sauce. The salad was ok, but the fries were moderately aromatic. Nobody claims the potato sticks are homemade here, but we do know of other potato chip makers that we’d prefer.

Ufnau wine

One of the pluses of the economy is certainly the supply of liquids. We had good kombucha and on the soft drinks list there would have been homemade iced tea. Even better, however, is the range of wines that thrive right outside the door. Räuschling, Pinot Noir, even a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are made from Ufnau grapes from the Einsiedeln monastery cellar. If you order the Miraval (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s Provençal estate), it’s your fault. Then you’d prefer a real Pope Francis altar wine, available for 48 francs per liter.

Afterwards, it is certainly worth taking a tour of the island, passing through the fields of wild garlic, from which pesto is prepared for the spaghetti offered, and in the medieval church of San Pietro e Paolo, under which there are traces of a Gallo-Roman temple was discovered.

Then return to Zurich by scheduled boat. Or, even more luxuriously, by booking the boat shuttle in advance. All in all, a very eventful journey!
