State Garden Shows: Blossom Dreams: where Germany is blooming this year

Some have just opened, others are about to open: State garden exhibitions are travel destinations for flower lovers from Neuenburg am Rhein to Eppingen, from Torgau to Beelitz. And why this year the Netherlands is particularly interesting for gardening enthusiasts.

Beelitz: garden party for all the senses

The asparagus town of Beelitz is located just outside of Berlin. Since April 14, more than a million early plants have welcomed visitors to this year’s Brandenburg State Horticultural Show. The 15-hectare site with the “Park an der Nieplitz” and the “Giardini delle Arche” is located between the old town and the Nieplitz river. In the parish church of Sankt Marien-Sankt Nikolai 14 different performances are presented in the hall. The kitchen plays an important role. In addition to asparagus, the region is synonymous with other regional products, such as strawberries, blueberries, pumpkins, eggs, honey and potatoes. Visitors can feast on various “pleasure islands”. Be it the cafes on the Nieplitz and a former water mill, a passenger ship converted into a cocktail bar or the approximately 50 picnic areas in the Arche Gardens.

Neuenburg am Rhein: city and river united

This year’s state garden exhibition in Baden-Württemberg opened on 22 April in the border triangle of Germany, France and Switzerland. The centerpiece is a newly created terrace on the Rhine, 700 meters long and 30 wide: lawns for sunbathing, jetties for kayaks and canoes and a viewing platform make the Rhine accessible and tangible again. This also applies to the Rhine floodplains and the Rhine meadows, which are also part of the garden show concept. The Stadtpark am Wuhrloch will be significantly improved. A beer garden under old chestnut trees, a medieval playground and a skate park and amusement park offer variety. New floristic themed shows are presented every two weeks in the flower house. The new local recreation areas, which visitors can discover under the motto “Looking at the Reno”, extend over approximately 23 hectares.

Eppingen: summer in the half-timbered city

In fact, this garden exhibition – as a “green project” the shortened version of a state garden exhibition – was supposed to take place in Eppingen in Baden-Württemberg in 2021. However, due to the pandemic, it has been postponed for a year. A “green arch” around the historic center of Eppingen – located west of Heilbronn – connects the open spaces of the city center with the Elsenz and Hilsbach streams. 15 hectares were redesigned with the Bachwegle promenade, the area around the “Zum Schwanen” community center, the station lawns with the city pond and the confluence of Elsenz and Hilsbach. From 20 May a rich program of events with concerts and events awaits visitors.

Torgau: floral splendor on the Elbe

From 23 April, the Saxon state horticulture exhibition welcomes visitors in the former electoral residence town of Torgau. The site of about 24 hectares is located between the historic city park and the landscape area of Elba. A two-kilometer main trail connects the four areas Glacis, Junger Garten, Eichwiese and Konzertplatz. The “Deichgucker” observation tower, equipped with a ladder and a tube slide, offers a good overview. In the immediate vicinity, a skate park, a beach, various playgrounds and a petting zoo delight young visitors. Of course, there are also themed gardens and a flower room. In this, floral specialties are presented, from bonsai and bamboo to rhododendrons and roses to hydrangeas and orchids.
