May Day Demonstrations: Origins of May Day

Why do people take to the streets all over the world? The origins of the day, also known as “Labor Movement Day”, lie in the American labor movement. On May 1, 1886, workers in the United States protested. They demanded better working conditions and sustained an eight-hour working day. Driven by the US effort, workers around the world took to the streets to demonstrate. Since then, the demonstrations have continued in Europe and are repeated every year. Not only working conditions are reported. Many people on this day also rebel against racism, discrimination or gentrification.

The protests in May right now: where are the demonstrations taking place in Germany?

In Germany, numerous associations are calling for demonstrations in May. The Confederation of German Trade Unions (DGB) demonstrated on 1 May 2022 with the motto “Solidarity, peace and self-determination for Ukraine! We are united in our conviction: no more war – lay down your arms! All over the world!”. Demonstrations take place in Delitzsch, Borna and Leipzig, among other places, as the “Leipziger Zeitung” writes. Numerous demonstrations have been announced in Berlin alone. In addition to democratic protests, these also include more radical rallies such as that of leftist womendemonstration “Take back the night” (Prenzlauer Berg).

In addition to the events, there are numerous events such as festivals and flea markets. There are three street festivals in Berlin-Neukölln. However, the “Migrantifa Berlin” sees this as a “dirty trick”, as the “Tagesspiegel” reports.

+++ 30/04/2022: Already numerous events the day before May 1st +++

Berlin police are due to numerous demonstrations in May over the weekend before a large-scale operation. As in previous years, there are numerous activities the day before May 1st. On Saturday afternoon (15:00), the leftist groups want to march through the Wedding district, 2,000 participants registered. In previous years, this gathering had remained largely peaceful.

A street festival (15:00) has been announced on Rigaer Strasse, in the Friedrichshain neighborhood, next to a house partially occupied by left-wing autonomists. The vibe here could get more aggressive over the course of the evening. A demonstration at Kreuzberg’s Kottbuser Tor could also become critical because a police station is planned there, welcomed by residents but rejected by left-wing groups. Also in the evening, a feminist demonstration moves from the Prenzlauer Berg district to Mitte. In addition, there are usually Walpurgis Night celebrations in various parks.

Sundays continue with a whole series of demonstrations: from the main meeting of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) to the Labor Day at noon to parades by motorbike or bicycle to protests against the measures of the crown. The police paid particular attention to the demonstration by left and radical left groups entitled “Revolutionary May Day” on Sunday evening in Neukölln.

Left autonomists are expected to explode into violence, as in past decades. 5,000 to 20,000 participants are expected.

Concerned about the anti-Semitic incidents, the police had banned a demonstration of Palestinian initiatives scheduled for Friday afternoon. The courts upheld the decision. Police still expect further rallies and demonstrations. On 1 May a block of migrants, mainly of Turkish and Arab origin, wants to participate in the traditional May Day demonstration as “Migrantifa”.

The police announced that they would also use interpreters to have the slogans translated into Arabic and to check if they were provocative. According to authorities, a total of 5,500 police officers were on duty at various demonstrations across the city on 1 May.

In addition to Berlin, demonstrations by left groups are also planned in Hamburg, where there had also been riots in previous years.
