Do NFTs fill the PlayStation? How SONY prepares for the future

Will PlayStation Get NFTs Soon? It is worth asking the question with Sony Interactive who recently issued a patent for “single track and at stake using tokens on a distributed ledger”.

NFT and Playstation: the culmination of a year of study

Despite the many voices that have been raised against the use of NFTs in video games, Sony seems determined to enter the blockchain game through the front door. After more than a year of additions and changes, Sony Interactive has just released a patent related to what looks a lot like an NFT ecosystem adapted for the world of video games.

The first sentence in the patent summary leaves little room for doubt:

“Aspects of this technology include systems and methods for creating, modifying, tracking, authenticating and/or transferring unique digital assets associated with a video game. »

Sony therefore wants to use a blockchain to be able to track the various assets that make up a video game.

Which Blockchain? Nothing is specified in the publication, but the documents already provide a fairly complete overview of the direction the project will take.

An environment that combines centralization and blockchain

This publication outlines the architecture of an environment where cloud and blockchain coexist. On the one hand, the different media that will be hosted on the servers and, on the other hand, the on-chain logging of asset activity. Sony explains:

“In traditional video games, there is no way to differentiate a specific instance of a game object that a famous player used to win a tournament from any other instance of the game object.”

NFTs will allow developers to add technical features that currently seem to be lacking not only at Sony, but in the entire gaming industry.

In addition to being able to better track the movements of digital assets, Sony intends to exploit the possibility of exchanging NFTs in peer-to-peer mode. Among the diagrams explaining the different technical concepts, a market is foreseen with different possibilities for different types of resources such as a world, a factory, equipment or consumables.

Sony’s Web3 Experiences

With this patent filing, Sony signs a third initiative in the world of NFTs and more generally of the “web3”. In May 2022, the company announced a partnership with Theta Labs for 3D VR sculptures. In September, a patent was filed for NFT-authenticated music.

Today the universe in question is that of video games. A patent filing is done to protect an idea before anything else, not necessarily to make the idea come true later. But when an idea is drawn so precisely and for a year and a half, the sequence of events promises to be interesting to follow!

The events of last week and the failure of FTX are there to remind us that we must remain cautious in this still very young ecosystem. Get into the habit of healthy distrust.
