NFTs have turned into explicit images and The Big Bang Theory

Following an attack on one of its service providers, the Magic Eden marketplace saw some NFTs displayed replaced by explicit images or scenes from The Big Bang Theory series. Since then, a patch has been applied to fix the problem.

A surprise for NFT holders on Magic Eden

Yesterday, some users of the Magic Eden non-fungible token market were surprised find that their NFT images had been replaced. While some have been treated to scenes from The Big Bank Theory series, others have seen the original images obscured by photos with explicit characters.

Many collections have been affected without apparent distinction. In fact, this is not a Magic Eden hack per se, and the affected NFTs are really safe.

The trouble came from a third-party service to the platform, on which the latter caches the images of the NFTs, so as to improve the user experience by viewing them faster. It was this service provider that was hacked and then sent the wrong images to the NFT owners. Magic Eden explains that a fix was applied quicklyand that all you had to do was refresh your browser afterward for everything to go back to normal:

The problem of storing NFT content

If this relatively comical episode turns out to be lucky without consequences, however, leads us to question the intrinsic value attributed to non-fungible tokens. For example, the base price of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) collection would still be 75-80 ETH, depending on sources, if all their illustrations were to disappear?

And for good reason, most of the time only the smart contract to identify the NFT is truly decentralized, but its content, audio, video or even photography, it is often stored on centralized servers. A flaw on these servers could therefore, in a sense, “bare” NFTs, no longer allowing them to view this original content.

That’s one of the problems with this industry, which is still in its infancy, that try to solve certain projects . This is the case, for example, of PROOF, at the origin of the Moonbirds collection, which is working on the development of solutions to host its NFTs totally on-chain.
