Cryptosat is a Californian company specializing in the construction of satellites. But not just any! It is fully dedicated to designing satellites to power blockchain and cryptographic applications. To get 2023 off to a good start, Cryptosat has announced the orbital launch of its second satellite, called Crypto2.
A second successful mission
This is not Cryptosat’s first orbital launch. On May 25, 2022, it had already put a first nanosatellite into orbit. It was the size of a coffee cup. Dubbed “Crypto1”, it served as a tamper-proof platform to secure blockchain and other Web3 protocols.
On January 3 Cryptosat renews the experience with a more efficient satellite. Indeed, Crypto2 shows 30 times more computing power than its predecessor. It carries over 110 devices that would cover the cryptocurrency and blockchain needs of 23 different countries. Most importantly, it is capable of generating a cryptographic key pair that can prevent premature decryption.
“The launch of Crypto2 is an important step towards expanding infrastructure from a single satellite in 2022. The launch of Crypto2 gives us greater availability and more powerful specifications to support the growing portfolio of use cases in our development pipeline “says Yonatan Winetraub (co-founder of Cryptosat) in a report.
Crypto2 in orbit: a successful collaboration between Cryptosat and SpaceX
For this second orbital launch, Cryptosat used SpaceX’s two-stage Falcon 9 rocket. The partnership between the two companies is not new. The first Cryptosat nanosatellite was also put into orbit with the help of SpaceX.
The success of two launches inevitably underscores a great partnership between Cryptosat and SpaceX. The two entities agree on a fundamental point: the isolation of the computers in orbit makes it possible to optimize the security of the cryptocurrencies. We remind in advance that the CEO of SpaceX, Elon Musk, has a particular interest in cryptocurrencies (and above all in Dogecoin).
Cryptosat is not the only company specializing in building satellites that power blockchain and cryptocurrencies. On the other hand, it has stood out for its ability to offer the crypto community a physically inaccessible and inviolable platform thanks to Crypto1. Of course, we hope Crypto2 brings more innovation.
